Long before Ryan Gosling became what he is today, he was starring in the half hour teen comedy – Breaker High.
The show centered around a group of students from different hometowns taking their school year on a cruise ship. They’d travel to different places around the world and get cultured and stuff. There was one character for every stereo type. Someone you could ‘relate to,’ whether you were a nerd, a jock, a pris, whatever. There was really only one season of this show? Man. Not really surprising, but I must have watched those episodes repeatedly. Further investigation has revealed that there were 44 episodes in that one season, so I feel less weird.
Admittedly, the show was pretty terrible. Like super terrible. But somehow, we loved it. Even though we were technically too old for the show. There were a group of us in university that would get together and watch it religiously. Usually with excess snacks and some booze. These sessions sprawled out with friends in a dorm room – usually Rhonda’s – totally relaxed and laughing ourselves sick are some of my favourite memories from that time of my life.
Here’s a clip from one of my favourite episodes – when they visited Canada. There are lots of ‘ehs and making fun of the words we use and strange allusions that we’re all prudes or something.
Ryan Gosling wasn’t the reason we watched this show. His character had basically zero sex appeal and he tried way, way too hard. We were more into Scott Vickaryous (years later I ended up being roommates with one of his ex-girlfriends, it was a strange circle of life). He was obviously going to be the one that went places. Nope. He went these places… But a few other actors did go on to be recognizable faces:
Gosling – he grew up nicely
Tyler Labine – no longer the shlumpy goof he was on the show
Rachel Wilson – a staple actress in Canadian programming
Terri Conn – I guess she’s in some soap opera
Persia White – apparently she’s on The Vampire Diaries, but I think of her from her one episode appearance on Buffy
Oh Breaker High, you’ll always have a place in my heart.
